Assafir

This project demonstrates how legacy journalistic archives can be revitalized through AI, data storytelling, and interactive design. It works with the digitized archive of Assafir, a leading Lebanese daily newspaper that shaped political and cultural debate across the Arab world for decades, to produce four prototypes that translate print-era reporting into dynamic, digital-first formats. These include:

  • A recreated historical interview in video form
  • Quantifiable datasets drawn from narrative reporting
  • AI-assisted discourse analysis tracking shifts in political rhetoric over time
  • Visual timelines and maps that chart social and cultural change

Beyond its initial prototypes, the project offers a scalable and sustainable model for the future of archives. It shows how historical material can remain relevant to contemporary debates, how legacy media can collaborate with digital-native teams, and how static archives can become interactive public resources.

By bridging qualitative storytelling with quantitative insight, the project lays the groundwork for a long-term digital library while providing a replicable framework for other media organizations seeking to modernize their archives and re-engage audiences.
